One of the people who inspires me as an entrepreneur is Sultan Mehmed II. This line, often associated with his determination, still carries a powerful lesson for founders today: “Either I will conquer Istanbul, or Istanbul will conquer me.” At the age of 21, Mehmed II conquered Constantinople. He did not succeed through courage alone. He combined determination with two extraordinary strategic decisions. First, he commissioned the Şahi, one of the largest cannons of its time, to challenge the powerful Byzantine walls. Then he faced another obstacle: the Byzantines had blocked the sea route with chains. So he chose the path that seemed impossible to everyone else. He moved his ships over land during the night and launched them into the Golden Horn. In the end, he did more than conquer a city. He closed one era and opened another. Entrepreneurship can be like that. Sometimes we face a wall that seems impossible to overcome. And sometimes the answer is not to push harder against the wall. It is to change the battlefield—to forge a new path where none seems to exist. When we reach a dead end, we need to make a promise to ourselves: I will not give up. I will rethink the problem. I will challenge the assumptions. And if necessary, I will attempt the unconventional route that others cannot yet see. Because sometimes the way to reach the goal is not to fight the obstacle directly. It is to find the move that changes the entire game. What would “moving your ships over land” look like in your entrepreneurial journey?
