There’s a side to building something alone that I don’t think you fully notice while you’re in it. The late nights. The early mornings. The build. The research. The testing. The coding. The coding. And then somehow… more coding. Then there’s the marketing, outreach, fixes, decisions, things that break, things that finally work, and the constant feeling that there is always one more task waiting. Most of the time, there isn’t much space left to think about how lonely that can be. It just sits quietly in the background. Then my wife will ask, “How’s the app going?” And I’ll try to explain what I’ve been working on. A new workflow. A bug I finally solved. Research I’m excited about. Why a particular part of UploadPack matters. And I’m met with that familiar blank look. Not because she doesn’t care. Because she understandably has no idea what I’m talking about. What she does understand is the hours. She understands I’m doing this mostly alone. She understands I’m building it for us, for the people I believe need it, and because I have this stubborn conviction that something like UploadPack should exist. That means more than understanding the code. Solo entrepreneurship can look exciting from the outside. Freedom. Ownership. Building something from nothing. And it is all of those things. But sometimes it is also sitting alone at midnight solving a problem nobody else even knows exists, fixing it, moving on, and starting again the next morning. I’m proud of what I’m building. I’m excited about where UploadPack is going. But I’m also learning that building alone doesn’t mean you never feel alone. Sometimes you just don’t notice it until someone asks how you’re doing.
